How will our Advisory community work toward success? Week 1: Tuesday, 4 August-Friday, 7 August

Homework: 
  1. Tuesday Night: Sign and return ALL paperwork, including the last three pages of your handbook (first Advisory with 100% in gets ice cream sandwiches!)
  2. Wednesday Night: Watch the flip class video from Wednesday with your parents/guardians and have them send me a note (on paper or via email!).

Tuesday, 4 August

1) Warm Up and Welcome
  1. Play Connections.
    1. Stand and list things you did this summer or things you enjoy. 
    2. Stay standing until someone else stands. 
  2. Introductions
2) What is Advisory?
  1. Before you read: Who will help you get into college? How?
  2. As you read the syllabus, note any questions you have.
  3. After you read the syllabus: 
    1. Work with a partner to create an advertisement pitching Advisory to your middle school. 
    2. Ask any questions you have!
3) My Advisory Guide:
  1. Assemble your guide. Put your contact sheet in the right place. 
  2. Flip through your guide.
  3. Make a cover for your guide. Do this on a giant index card so that as your goals change you can change your cover. Include:
    1. Your name
    2. A logo for your dream college
    3. A sketch showing your ideal major
    4. A generic type of dorm you'd want to live in
    5. A logo or sketch showing your future career
4) Exit Ticket:
  1. On your sticky note, write a question you have about LEC so far and a highlight from your day.
  2. Post your sticky note on the door on your way out.

Wednesday, 8 August

1) Warm Up: Content Connections
  1. Skim through the syllabi you have for different classes.
  2. Write what you think the most important word or phrase is from each on on a sticky note.
  3. Make concept maps as a class to see connections.
2) Advisory Guide Cover
  1. Flip through your guide.
  2. Make a cover for your guide. Do this on a giant index card so that as your goals change you can change your cover. Include:
    1. Your name
    2. A logo for your dream college
    3. A sketch showing your ideal major
    4. A generic type of dorm you'd want to live in
    5. A logo or sketch showing your future career
  3. Glue your index card to your folder.
  4. Stand Up-Hand Up-Pair Up to find a partner. Show your partner your cover. Write a sticky note telling your partner what is awesome about his/her cover.

3) Exit Ticket: Handbook Brain Dump! 

  1. Write what you remember from the handbook on your way out the door. 
  2. Remember! Handbook Kahoot TOMORROW!
Tonight's Homework: 
  1. For Students: Remember your Guide Cover Index Card is due next Tuesday!
  2. For Parents/Guardians and Students
    1. Read the syllabus with your parents/guardians.
    2. Watch the video below.
    3. Remind your parents/guardians to email me or send me a note (it can be in another language!). 
    4. Sign up for Remind!

1) Warm Up: Advisee Snapshot

  1. Find the "Advisee Snapshot" in your Advisory Guide.
  2. Fill it in!
2) Handbook Kahoot

  1. Choose to work by a partner or by yourself.
  2. Go to kahoot.it on your computer or phone.
  3. Enter the game pin projected on the board.
  4. Make a username.
  5. Show what you know about the handbook by winning Kahoot!

  1. Turn in your "Student Code of Conduct" signed sheet tomorrow!
  2. Finish your Advisory Guide cover by Tuesday.
  3. Bring a novel or magazine or book, etc to read tomorrow!
