How can I build the career experience I want? Advisory Week 35: 26-28 April

Happy Week 35 of Advisory!

1) Ongoing: Complete an informational interview, the final work is due to me by May 2.

Essential Question: How can I build the career experience I want?
Objectives: I can...
...identify information that goes into a resume and cover letter.
...write a practice cover letter.

Tuesday, 26 April
Today you will begin building your resume. Then, later in the week you will write your cover letter. Regardless of your future career choices, these skills will help you!

1) Warm Up: Positivity Moment - Write me a note!
  1. What is your favorite class this semester? Why?
  2. Do you have any exciting plants this summer?
2) Resume Builder Day 1
  1. Log in to
  2. Go to "Plan">"For a Career".
  3. Locate the "Quicklinks" tab on the right side.
  4. Select "Resume Builder".
  5. Pretend you are graduating from the four year university of your choice. Ask yourself the following before you begin building your resume:
    1. What jobs did you have in high school and college?
    2. What were organizations were you involved in during college?
    3. What unique experiences did you have? (Internship, study abroad, scholarship programs, etc.)
    4. What skills do you have? What are you really good at?
  6. Begin to work through the resume builder. Let me know if you need help!

Wednesday, 27 April

1) Warm Up: What area do you think will be the strongest on your real future resume?

2) Resume Builder Day 2
  1. Return to "Resume Builder".
  2. Select "Edit".
  3. Add on. 
  4. When you finish, select "PDF this". This will be a small blue link at the top of the screen.
3) Cover Letter Day 1
  1. Make a copy of the document here.
  2. Begin writing your cover letter.
Thursday, 28 April

1) Cover Letter Day 2

  1. Open your copy of the document here.
  2. Finish writing your cover letter.
  3. Check your spelling, grammar, and formatting.
2) Finalize your Work!

  1. Option 1: You are confident in your resume and cover letter!
    1. Pretend I am your future employer. 
    2. Copy and paste your cover letter into the body of an email.
    3. Attach your resume PDF.
    4. Make sure you have a professional subject.
    5. Send your email to me!
  2. Option 2: You want a lot of feedback on your resume and/or cover letter!
    1. Pretend I work in University Career Services at your school.
    2. Send me an email asking two specific questions about your resume and/or cover letter.
    3. Attach your cover letter and your resume PDF.
    4. Make sure you have a professional subject.
    5. Send your email to me!
